Frequently Asked Questions

Find answers to common questions about our programs, mission, and how to get involved as a mentee, mentor, or partner.

For Mentees

What is FGAP’s core approach?

FGAP employs two integrated approaches: 1) Community Building to foster social connectedness and mutual support, and 2) Guidance & Mentorship to deliver free peer consultations and skill-building workshops.

What kind of mentor will I be matched with?

Our key differentiator is our matching strategy. We aim to match each mentee with a trained doctoral student within their specific field of interest. Whenever feasible, we strive to pair you with a mentor from the specific school and program you are targeting to provide a significant strategic advantage.

What specific things can a mentor help with?

Mentors are trained to assist with the entire application process, including school selection, material writing (feedback on personal statements and essays), standardized test strategies, networking guidance, and interview preparation. They provide ongoing support and encouragement throughout your journey.

Is the mentorship program free?

Yes. All of our direct services, including one-on-one peer mentorship and our workshop series, are provided completely free of charge for FGLI students.

For Prospective Mentors

What are the qualifications to become a mentor?

Our mentors are typically doctoral students who have successfully navigated the graduate admissions process themselves. We look for individuals who are empathetic, patient, and goal-oriented. All accepted mentors receive centralized online training based on our comprehensive FGAP Mentor Manual.

What is the role and commitment of a mentor?

The role of a mentor is to be a patient guide, an empathetic listener, and a goal-oriented strategist. Our initial model is structured around three core consultation sessions per mentee, but we encourage ongoing support as needed to best serve the student’s journey.

For Prospective Sponsors

What is FGAP’s legal structure?

FGAP is in the process of formalizing as an independent 501(c)(3) non-profit organization. Our funding model is diversified and includes foundation grants, corporate sponsorships, individual giving, and contributions from a companion for-profit entity.

How does FGAP measure its impact?

We measure our success through key performance indicators (KPIs) including the number of students served, workshop engagement rates, and participant satisfaction. Most importantly, we track the application and acceptance rates of our participants with the goal of demonstrating a significant, measurable improvement in their success.

What is the opportunity for a sponsor?

Supporting FGAP offers the opportunity to partner with a scalable organization poised to become a national leader in education equity. Sponsors support a measurable, direct-service model that addresses the needs of over 8 million FGLI undergraduate students in the U.S. and helps build a diverse talent pipeline for graduate programs and beyond.

For Future Chapter Leaders

Can I start an FGAP chapter at my university?

Yes. Our vision is to establish a thriving FGAP chapter within every major university in the United States. We are currently in Phase 1 of our national expansion and are actively seeking partners at new institutions. Please contact us to learn more about the process.

What support do chapters receive?

The central FGAP organization provides extensive support to its chapters. This includes a comprehensive digital Chapter Operations Manual, a full curriculum library for all skill-building workshops, and access to a central online platform for resource sharing and communication. Additionally, our national Program Director provides direct support and training to all chapter leads.
